The Magna Carta - In TubeLSM027Po
An attractive facsimile of the original Magna Carta, decorated with the Coats of Arms of the Earls and Barons who were prominent when the Charter was signed in 1215.
The document comes in a black tube with two Coats of Arms and the words 'Magna Carta 1215' embossed in gold on the side. It also comes with a translation of the Magna Carta from its original Latin into English.
The Magna Carta is, perhaps, the best known document in English history. It was forced on King John by a group of feudal barons in an attempt to limit his powers and protect their privileges, but its wider importance is as the basis of constitutional law not only in England but also its (then) colonies where the English legal system was used as a model for their own legal systems.
The 1215 charter required King John to proclaim certain liberties and accept that his will was not arbitrary - for example by explicitly accepting that no "freeman" (non-serf) could be punished except according to the law of the land, a right that still exists. Sealed by King John at Runnymeade on 15th June, 1215, and confirmed by later Monarchs, the Charter has stood the test of time and provides the basic fundamental principle of human rights.
