There has been a lot of curiosity & plenty of versions regarding this cheeky depiction. One version has it that while the building was still under construction an Indian subcontractor accused the British contractor of underpaying him and took the Englishman to court. As was certain in colonial India, he lost the case. He then avenged himself by carving the monkey as a part of the building to mock the system which had denied him justice. There are however, no conclusive answers.
