There has been a lot of curiosity & plenty of versions regarding this cheeky depiction. One version has it that while thebuilding was still under construction an Indian subcontractoraccusedthe British contractor of underpaying him and took the Englishman tocourt. As was certain in colonial India, he lost the case. He then avenged himself by carving themonkeyas a part of the building to mock the system which had denied him justice. There are however, no conclusive answers.
